Lithium

Being able to produce a ton of electricity is great, but it's useless if you can't store it. Most boats these day use some form of lead acid batteries. There is nothing particularly wrong with lead acid, but for us we found lithium just had too many benefits. Lithium batteries can accept a much higher charge rate, can be depleted deeper and more times than lead acid, and are about 80% lighter. If you've ever lifted a car battery, you know how heavy lead acid batteries are. We have replaced our 6 lead acid batteries with 4 200AH Victron lithium batteries. In the same footprint, we have twice the energy storage available, and cut the weight by 80%. We opted to keep our bow thruster, windlass and starter batteries as AGMS, as they work fine and are already wired appropriately. Our house battery bank (what powers all our toys) is now 800 amp hours of lithium, connected to the AGMS via battery to battery chargers.
